The private information of Australian jobseekers has been exposed on the internet after global IT and management consultancy Capgemini placed database backups on a publicly accessible server.
Applying for jobs earlier this year, I discovered how straightforward it would be to create honeypots for collecting personal info. Just post an interesting job ad!
The jobs I applied for were all listed on Seek, but some of them required me to sign up to portals and divulge my "personal data" to them. Some of them were recruitment agencies, some of them private businesses. Irrespective of whether I used the recruiter's site or Seek's, there are still a whole lot of people that now have identifiable information about me.
Sure, much of the info is already in the public domain via on my LinkedIn profile, and I'm happy to share that. But I'd rather they didn't have my phone number and email address, and cert numbers etc. But you can't apply for a job and not provide that info!
