Paranoid or Mad?
As the Mayan calendar has predicted the apocalypse, the end of the world, on December 21, 2012, is less than a month away, National Geographic Channel has the documentary PREPPERS UK: SURVIVING ARMAGEDDON shows some Britons stockpiling arms, food, and even condoms. Some have secret hideaways away from towns and cities for when the apocalypse strikes. Between them they fear a new dark age, natural disasters, a solar flare, and a world without law and order. Some Britons have spent their entire lives and thousands of pounds preparing for a disaster.
folks, the Brits are doing it wrong! - here's what's most important:

I guess surviving a natural or man-made disaster or a turmoil (war, revolution, energy/water outages etc) is quite a different thing from an "end of the world"...
for the former - definitely does make sense to stock a week worth supply of food. water etc (I personally think dark chocolate has good shelf-life, easily stackable, and high nutritional value!
(also my wife is good at safely hiding it somewhere so that some hungry mysterious near-sighted clumsy nocturnal creature can't find and eat it all at once all "strategic quantities" supplies she buys in Coles when it's a bit discounted ;-)
so in case of disasters - yes you can prepare for them...
in case of genuine "End of the World" - just more prayer or more champagne, depenidng on your philosophies/beliefs/etc
btw, if you are after even some more more "esoterics" - see here:

I reckon they're all insane. Why else would they allow named photographs of themselves standing alongside their supplies to be published in a widely read newspaper? The neighbours will be kicking their doors down in no time at all.
When it comes to preppers, the Mormons are tops. 3 month's supplies for every household. Survive that!
