The problem with Google is the democratization of information through PageRank. All too frequently it displays the most popular answer, not necessarily the correct one. :-|
There are still books. :-)

+James Gemmell this is very true, although when it comes to some types of programming questions (as in how to to approach something in all sorts of APIs etc) - things like "StackOverflow" greatly helped in making the internet useful again!! ;)

I think there is still a conceptual level that is better inferred from books  than "surfing"... ?!?
