+1'd post by Dean BuddThe programmer, like the poet, works only slightly removed from pure thought-stuff. He builds his castles in the air, from air, creating by exertion of the imagination. Few media of creation are so flexible, so easy to polish and rework, so readily capable of realizing grand conceptual structures. Yet the program construct, unlike the poet's words, is real in the sense that it moves and works, producing visible outputs separate from the construct itself. It prints results, draws pictures, produces sounds, moves arms. The magic of myth and legend has come true in our time. One types the correct incantation on a keyboard, and a display screen comes to life, showing things that never were nor could be. Programming then is fun because it gratifies creative longings built deep within us and delights sensibilities we have in common with all men. ~ Frederick Brooks Jr.

+1'd post by Michael PoloniI bought a new gadget last week: a +Google Nexus 5x. As a bonus, it came with a free Chromecast. The Nexus 5x is only my second Android phone, and there's plenty to like. My main disappointments are to do with the hardware and the price - it's significantly more expensive than my Nexus 4 but lacks some of the higher-end hardware features I really wanted such as optical image stabilisation. I was surprised to see that even the new Nexus 6p doesn't have a camera with optical stabilisation. Alas, now I must wait for a new sim card, as the micro-sim from my N4 is no good for the nano-sim designed N5x. With TPG in the middle of a migration from the Optus network to Vodafone, I'm stuck waiting an indefinite time, with thousands of customers in the queue for new sim cards. A big selling point for me in choosing the N5x over the Samsung S6 was the new 'imprint' fingerprint reader to unlock the phone. Can I say that 'imprint' is every bit as good as all the reviewers claim?! I'm really liking this bit of hardware, and the design of it on the back of the phone. The idea is that you can easily unlock the phone as you grab it out of your pocket, and eventually use it for authorisations such as payments. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable authorising payments, because fingerprints can be forged from such things as smudge marks. Imprint unlocks the phone quite quickly, and makes me wonder how I ever put up with the regularity of punching in a code on the screen to unlock my N4. Two other big reasons for my choice of phone: Firstly to get access to Android Marshmellow's feature of selectable permissions for apps. Secondly to have a phone with 4G capability, across all the frequency bands used in Australia (this is important, as my old N4 will be quite limited with my telco's move from Optus to Vodafone). There's also the issue of the fixed battery in my old N4 starting to show its age, which when added to all the other issues does affect the efficiency of using the phone for work purposes. Things to like about the N5x and Android Marshmellow that I've discovered so far: * 'Imprint' fingerprint recognition * Permissions for apps can be individually enabled and disabled * Feels sturdy and light-weight * Plastic back has a similar grip and feel to the Diztronic case I've been happy with on my N4 * Overall dimensions only marginally taller than my N4 but noticeably thinner * Fast charging (if you have the right cables!) * Picking up the phone turns on the screen, in grey low-power mode, to show the time and important notifications without needing to push a button Things to dislike about the experience: * The migration assistant gives you the ability to "copy across" apps, settings and user data from your old phone. In practice this is very limited, as it doesn't appear to copy any locally stored data (instead relying on it having been stored in the cloud) and doesn't keep many of the configurations. For example, I was dissapointed to find I needed to recreate all the icons and widgets on my homescreens. * Similarly, not all of the apps installed on my N4 were installed on my N5x! The first one I found missing was LinkedIn. Upon deeper investigation, there appears to be a discrepancy between what the 'Play' app says is installed on my N4 and what 'Play' says is when I use it via a web browser on my PC (the latter was missing those apps). * The ringtones I was using on my N4 are not provided * The 'Power control' widget seems to be no more (I'm now trying out 'Power Toggles' https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.painless.pc which is extensively configurable and looks the goods) * USB Type-C. Ok, longer-term this is a much better standard, however it means I now need new cables and a type-c-to-type-a converter for my PCs. Proper Type-C cables aren't cheap - don't be fooled by the eBay cheapies! http://ausdroid.net/2015/11/01/google-engineer-explains-why-you-cant-use-most-usb-a-to-usb-c-cable-to-charge-at-3a/ * The supplied USB type-c charger fits quite tightly to the N5x. I hope that's just because it's new, because pulling it off the charger is painful (literally) with my one-arm capability at the moment! * Supplied USB charger cables are getting shorter and shorter with each new model. The N5x charger cable is just under 1m which for me is just that bit too short for my desk. For comparison, my N10 charger was 1.5m, my N4 1.2m and the N5's was 1.1m. And given the changeover to Type-C, I can't simply make up the lost length with any of the spare USB extension cables I have. I was concerned, when buying the phone, about the protuding camera housing on the back. Would this make it difficult to use the phone when it's lying flat on a table? Answer - no. Despite the lump, the phone still sits steadily whether swyping in portrait or landscape mode. And what about the Chromecast? It's quite a simple little bit of hardware that is very easy to use. I made use of the Google Play free bonus movie rental last night, streaming 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron' in HD from my new N5x. I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to get working and how smooth the streaming is. Even on my crappy ADSL2+ connection it never lagged, with the movie starting up promptly within 5 or 6 seconds and never stuttering. The picture quality was perfect, without any artefacts. I was also surprised to see very little battery use on my phone from a couple of hours streaming. The Chromecast app will happily continue streaming in the background, allowing you to multitask on the phone. I'm not sure of the limits, however, having not tested this by running other intensive apps or even a phonecall. Am I happy? Yes, so far so good. Now if only I could start using the N5x as my phone! For now, I'm left waiting for TPG to find me in the queue and send me my new sim card. #Android #Nexus5x

I took these all in vertical / portrait mode. Merging the backgrounds full of fans would be a mess. I could have just knocked everything out, but that seems too sterile. +1'd post by Luxurious MagazineThe Limited Edition BMW Cruise M-Bike BMW is complimenting its bicycle collection in spring 2015 with the presentation of a colorful tribute to the BMW M automobiles: a limited special edition BMW Cruise M-Bike. The characteristic Austin Yellow Metallic of the BMW M GmbH was adapted for this edition, which has been limited to 500 exemplars. Each model of the limited edition comes with a specially made plaque and a certificate. The BMW Cruise M-Bike stands out with its modern design and lightweight construction elements. An optical highlight is the so-called "Bullneck" on the top tube in the front frame, which was borrowed from motorcycle design and is reminiscent of the tank position. Its hydro-formed aluminum frame and carbon components make the BMW Cruise M-Bike both light and stable. Despite its low weight, the frame is very rigid, which ensures maximum power transmission at the lowest possible effort. The ergonomic handlebar concept, which is individually adjustable, allows for a comfortable ride, while the hydraulic disc brakes from Shimano guarantee a safe arrival. A collection for any demand. For over 60 years, BMW has demonstrated its expertise in the development of modern, high-quality bicycles. The current bicycle collection stands for versatility and quality. For children and adolescents, two suitable models are available: the BMW Kids Bike and the BMW Cruise Bike Junior. For lovers of difficult terrain, the BMW All Mountain Bike is the perfect companion. For rides in the city, the BMW Cruise Bike, with its symbiotic interaction between dynamics and functionality, has its advantages. A sporty alternative is The BMW Trekking Bike with its hub dynamo, sturdy luggage rack, and integrated bicycle pump. In addition to the different bicycle models, the BMW bicycle collection offers matching equipment such as helmets, water bottles, bicycle locks, or a practical bike backpack.

+1'd post by Luxurious MagazineJaguar lends its industry-leading expertise in vibration analysis to create revolutionary Pinarello DOGMA K8-S bicycle for Team Sky Jaguar has deepened its Innovation Partnership with Team Sky by co-engineering the world’s first bespoke bicycle for hugely challenging terrains with bicycle manufacturing experts, Pinarello. The Pinarello DOGMA K8-S bicycle, which all eight Team Sky riders will debut at the Tour of Flanders on Sunday 5th April, possesses a new lightweight suspension system (DSS 1.0, Dogma Suspension System) and flexible flat carbon chain stays (FLEXSTAYS™) to create a pioneering suspension pivot in the rear triangle to ensure perfect riding comfort over rough terrains. Pinarello’s priority was to create an innovative framethat could improve rider isolation from the challenging road surfaces and help reduce rider fatigue. Taking key insights from the pioneering aerodynamics & technology-leading work on the DOGMA F8, the first collaborative project for Jaguar, Pinarello and Team Sky, Jaguar’s engineers have applied their advanced aerodynamics knowledge and experience in ride and vibration analysis, to help create an overall performance increase of 4.6% and 50% improved comfort for the riders over rough terrains from the previous DOGMA K model. “The Pinarello DOGMA K8-S looks as good as the DOGMA F8, and from the moment you get on it, you realise the difference straight away, especially on the cobbles,” said Team Sky’s Sir Bradley Wiggins. The reigning UCI World Time Trial Champion added: “I’ve never ridden anything like it on cobbles before, which is the most extreme terrain you can ride a bike on. The way it feels, its aerodynamics, stiffness, and improved flex in the rear, is game-changing for cycling. “This is the first time anyone has gone out there, looked at the demands of the cobbles, and made a bike specifically for that job. It was really noticeable in testing between the guys on the K8-S to the others that weren’t. It gives us lots of confidence and a huge advantage on the cobbles. “The level of innovation and thinking outside the box, largely down to Team Sky and the automotive expertise from Jaguar, is streets ahead of other teams and manufacturers out there.”

+1'd post by Kieran Simpson"There are many things I love about the IDE, but my favorite is the “smarts” of the editor. Code completion usually finds just what I need, and quickly – which means that I rely on it for typing speed, not just to explore unfamiliar APIs as I used to in Eclipse. This code awareness permeates the whole IDE – cross language refactorings, smart variable name suggestions, and clever code inspections. I’m embarrassed to admit how often I’ll look at code I’ve just written where the IDE is pointing out mistakes – sometimes subtle ones, where for example it has tracked values through a whole method and has concluded that a particular condition can never be true." And yet so many developers ignore the warnings.  I've opened a Java class written in Eclipse and I'm blinded by the sea of yellow warnings flashing at me. Ironically most of the devs who tell me TDD is rubbish are Eclipse users.  Can't prove causation here, but I do like to go back and show them all the NullPointerException warnings and tell them that their code needs the most testing :D :D :D

+1'd post by Michael PoloniA couple of weekends ago I posted some pics from the garden. Then last week I discovered one of those plants photographed had later revealed a surprise - different coloured flowers from the same plant! I haven't seen a plant flower with different colours like this before. It seems the flowers only last for a few days before crumpling up to make way for a new bud to open about a week later. It's proven to be a bargain of a plant, bought for only $2.50 at my local Bunnings recently.  No label, so I don't know what it is.  I'm not sure how long the plant will bloom for, but a long row of these plants might look good if they bloom through into the autumn. #Garden

+1'd post by Kieran SimpsonWe know that a market crash is coming sometime this year due to low oil prices. Yet instead of encouraging prudence, the RBA is following the Central Bank doctrine of manipulating people out of cash into more risky asset classes (predominantly equities). This makes my blood boil as it's destroying income for fixed income earners, the number of which is rising steadily due to our aging population; as well as prudent people who want to be far away when the blood hits the walls. This cut will only fuel the housing bubble or flow into the hands of the already wealthy (read banks). The evidence for that is in every other country that's had Central Banks f**k over their population.

+1'd post by Michael PoloniToday I rescued a turtle! #turtle   Cycling along the Main Yarra Trail today, I spotted this cute thing nestled up against the fence.  The poor thing was lost and seemed distressed. On the other side of the fence are a dozen lanes of freeway traffic; on the other side of the cycle path a 2-foot drop and another fence.  He must have walked a long way along the cycle path to get to this point, and going further would not have helped find the way back to the river. I'm surprised I was the only cyclist to spot him and stop to help, as it was mid Sunday afternoon by then.  He would surely have been walking the path all day to get this far. I touched his shell and he instantly hid back inside it. I picked him up and took him back to safety, finding a hole at the bottom of the river-side fence to escape under.  I placed him down under the fence, but he proceeded to slide a few meters downhill, hopefully uninjured!  I hope he finds his way back down towards the river below.

+1'd post by Dean BuddGreat Quote... Equality Equality in the presence of mutability has no meaning. Equality in the face of mutability and concurrency is utter lunacy. If any two objects resolve as being equal now, then there’s no guarantee that they will a moment from now. And if two objects aren’t equal forever, then they’re technically never equal (Baker 1993). Providing immutable objects once again assigns meaning to equality, in that if two objects are equal now, they’ll always be so. “The Joy of Clojure, Second Edition.”

+1'd post by Michael Dowden in Software DevelopmentMoral Hazard At Play The Big Secret Consulting Companies Don't Want You To Know As someone who has spent almost his entire career as a consultant, I should probably not share this information...but I feel compelled to do so due to the extreme disservice being performed by (and to) the software development profession. Since my field is software development, I will construct my comments within this context. In reality, however, these same principles apply to consulting services in all industries. TL;DR The next time you see software developers playing video games at work, understand that they are probably delivering a much higher quality of software than the programmer that is constantly working overtime. THE EMPLOYEE Let's say you hire a computer programmer to your company. You give him decent pay and benefits, and provide a fun environment with video games and pool tables. You assign him to work on your company's software and tell him that he must be on call to support the software any time there is a problem. This means that software defects require much more work from him. Since he is paid on salary, software defects actually reduce his net hourly pay. Because of this, it is in your programmer's best interest to ensure that the software works properly the first time, every time. This means he has plenty of time to play video games and pool, and makes more money per hour. THE CONSULTANT On the other hand, let's say you hire a consulting company to provide software development services. You pay a flat hourly rate only when someone is actively working on your software. You aren't paying someone for playing video games or pool. You aren't paying health insurance or other benefits, and this sounds like a really good deal. Initially, it is. The consulting company, however, does have to pay health insurance and benefits. They often pay higher salaries as well, and they have to do it based upon the number of hours they work on your software multiplied by the agreed-upon hourly rate. Part of this fee also needs to apply to overhead and executive salaries. In the end, their costs are higher than yours for the same service. Because you pay by the hour, you find yourself encouraging the consultant to hurry up and get things done quickly. You aren't willing to pay them to write unit tests, or to document their code. You only want to pay them to get the software finished. Despite the fact that they get less money from this, they acquiesce and do as you have asked. The sell this as being "easy to work with". When you have problems with the software, they happily work with you to solve the problems, charging you every hour. IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT What you have done in hiring the consultant is created a case where it is in their best interest to deliver a low-quality product so that they can continue to charge you for maintenance. In many cases, they will charge you much more for maintenance than for creating the software in the first place. Sometimes this fact gets hidden based upon how your company manages the budget. The initial creation of the software fell under budget A, while the maintenance falls under budget B. The manager of budget A probably got a bonus for creating the software quickly and keeping the project under budget. He took his wife to Tahiti. The manager of budget B is frantic. He might even resort to selling the video games and pool tables. He works longer and longer hours to keep on top of things, while earning less and less per hour. MORAL HAZARD From Wikipedia, "moral hazard is a situation in which a party is more likely to take risks because the costs that could result will not be borne by the party taking the risk.         [snip] Moral hazard arises because an individual or institution does not take the full consequences and responsibilities of its actions, and therefore has a tendency to act less carefully than it otherwise would, leaving another party to hold some responsibility for the consequences of those actions." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_hazard) In other words, Moral Hazard exists any time a company experiences no negative financial repercussions for their actions. Thie is even more pronounced when they experience positive financial rewards for negative behavior. Nearly all consulting agreements I have seen have built-in moral hazard. REPERCUSSIONS For the consulting industry, this is great. They actually make more money the less care they take with their craft. For your business, this is terrible since you end up paying more money for a lower quality product. This is also extremely bad for software developers. Consulting companies actually punish us for doing quality work, for writing tests, for writing documentation, and for trying to excel at our craft. When we are consultants, we don't get rewarded with video games and pool for doing good work -- we lose our jobs. We tolerate this because we are rewarded with the elusive "bonus" when we work overtime for the consulting company, never considering that the best bonus is well below minimum wage for our overtime. Please, please, consider moral hazard very carefully the next time you sign a consulting agreement. And consider that you're probably much better off paying programmers to play video games than to pay consultants to fix software they broke in the first place. #Software #Programming #Consulting #MoralHazard Image Credits: https://flic.kr/p/5KQyH9 (CC BY 2.0)

Which is why Vendors and big consultancies have killed off the promise/value of Agile.  Buying a product does not grant you Agility.  If your vendor isn't expressing the right culture by following the practices that Agile espouses either then you've hamstrung your organisation's ability to be Agile. It’s not just a painting. It’s a picture of a mad old cow who he thought the world of, and that's marvellous."

+1'd post by David MartinI recently bought my first tablet computer (a Samsung for those that care) and I've been enjoying using it. Having the tablet has made me think about a few things: - I've been using the tablet more than my desktop PC at home. However, that doesn't make my desktop PC any less useful or less important to me. I've reaffirmed my view that the predicted end of the desktop computing era is greatly exagerated. Sure, a larger proportion of the world's web browsing and social networking is being done on mobile devices, but desktops aren't going away. - I've become more concerned about how much Google knows about me. By default, my tablet was configured to share everything with Google (same goes for the apps from Samsung, Facebook, etc). I've used Google as my primary personal email client for years, so add to that my calendar, G+, wireless passwords, locations, photos, chats and more - that is enough to reconstruct a modern person's entire life. So, I've installed  +ownCloud on a server to move at least some of that data off Google. I toyed with also moving my email but figured it is too late anyway - Google already has my data and knows me well - it would a lot of hassle for little gain.

Image
+1'd post by David MartinI know that this is not a new article and has probably been shared many times before, but I really like the analogy with human-scale processes: if we start by saying that using L1 cache is equivalent to finding something in 3 seconds (i.e. like finding a sheet a paper on your desk); L2 cache = 14 seconds (finding a book on a nearby shelf); having to go to RAM = 4 minutes (having to walk down the corridor and ask someone for the information); then actually having read from a disk (seek) = 1 year 3 months (like having to travel the world in search of your data). That really demonstrates just how slow disks are and why programs can take so long to load.

The good thing about the Veneto Club on Sundays is that when you get tired of all the family talking, you can step outside to watch the kids play soccer. And laugh at the antics of coaches and parents. I suspect they have a new head chef at the club. The food was very good. I'll spare the family photo and just include a shot of the honour board ;)

+1'd post by Larry PageAbout 14 years ago, I got a bad cold, and my voice became hoarse.  At the time I didn’t think much about it.  But my voice never fully recovered.  So I went to a doctor and was diagnosed with left vocal cord paralysis.  This is a nerve problem that causes your left vocal cord to not move properly.  Despite extensive examination, the doctors never identified a cause — though there was speculation of virus-based damage from my cold.  It is quite common in cases like these that a definitive cause is not found. While this condition never really affected me — other than having a slightly weaker voice than normal which some people think sounded a little funny — it naturally raised questions in my mind about my second vocal cord.  But I was told that sequential paralysis of one vocal cord following another is extremely rare.   Fast forward to last summer, when the same pattern repeated itself — a cold followed by a hoarse voice. Once again things didn’t fully improve, so I went in for a check-up and was told that my second vocal cord now had limited movement as well. Again, after a thorough examination, the doctors weren’t able to identify a cause.   Thankfully, after some initial recovery I’m fully able to do all I need to at home and at work, though my voice is softer than before. And giving long monologues is more tedious for me and probably the audience.  But overall over the last year there has been some improvement with people telling me they think I sound better.  Vocal cord nerve issues can also affect your breathing, so my ability to exercise at peak aerobic capacity is somewhat reduced.  That said, my friends still think I have way more stamina than them when we go kitesurfing!  And Sergey says I’m probably a better CEO because I choose my words more carefully.  So surprisingly, overall I am feeling very lucky. Interestingly, while the nerves for your vocal cords take quite different routes through your body, they both pass your thyroid.  So in searching for a cause for both nerves that was an obvious place to look. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis in 2003.  This is a fairly common benign inflammatory condition of the thyroid which causes me no problems.  It is unclear if this is a factor in the vocal cord condition, or whether both conditions were triggered by a virus. In this journey I have learned a lot more about voice issues.  Though my condition seems to be very rare, there are a significant number of people who develop issues with one vocal nerve.  In seeing different specialists, I met one doctor — Dr. Steven Zeitels from the Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital Voice Center — who is really excited about the potential to improve vocal cord nerve function.  So I’ve arranged to fund a significant research program through the Voice Health Institute, which he will lead.  Thanks a bunch to my amazing wife Lucy, for her companionship through this journey and for helping oversee this project and get it off the ground.  Also, thanks to the many people who have helped with advice and information many of whom I have not had a chance to thank yet. Finally, we’ve put together a patient survey to gather information about other people with similar conditions.  As it’s fairly rare, there’s little data available today — and the team hopes that with more information they can make faster progress.  If you have similar symptoms you can fill it out here: http://voicehealth.org/ip

+1'd post by Dean BuddRight... it's Javascript crunch-time... We're in the process of evaluating Javascript Frameworks. JQuery is great but it's widget library leaves something to be desired. For simple web apps it seems to be the ticket, but for complex desktop style apps it could be lacking. In particular we're looking for a framework that offers very powerful (and easy to use) widgets like Grids, etc. We'll be evaluating YUI and ExtJS So, question. +1'd post by Bryan MurphyWith my birthday fast approaching, I have finally bit the bullet and bought a tablet (well ordered it actually - I have to wait another week to play with it).  I decided to go with the Nexus 10 (16 GB) due to the overall price, value for money, lack of bloatware and quick access to updates.   I decided the 10 inch form factor will suit me best but realise there will be times when I wish it was smaller - but then I will fall back to my trusty Galaxy S2.  I am not anticipating storing lots of movies on it so 16 GB should be OK (no SD card though so too bad if I change my mind).   For data I am going to use my S2 as a WIFI hotspot and hope the battery can still make it through the day.   The screen is a bit overspec'd but reviews seem to indicate battery life and overall performance is on par with other high end Android tablets so hopefully I can enjoy the upside of all those pixels without too much of the downside. I didn't consider an iPad as I find Apple too controlling and I think Android will close the gap over time.

+1'd post by Michael PoloniPhones & Tablets.  What to buy??? Google have released the next range of Nexus devices.  I'm seriously considering buying ... that is, if Google will put more stock back on the market!!!  The Nexus 4 has already sold out in Australia, and with the 32GB 10s also sold out it surely won't be long before the lesser capacity 16GB are all gone. My current phone is a Nokia N900, purchased in a bit of a hurry when my old Nokia N70 died.  It's served me well, but is ageing ... well, actually it's well passed its use-by date.  It is a slow phone.  Physically it's stood the test of time, and even survived its first accidental "drop test" recently.  Signs of wear can be seen by the flaking off of the buttons on the keyboard. Reviews about the Nexus 4 by LG point to a very capable and more mature Android device.  It looks the goods!  I see the major complaint is a lack of LTE, but at least for me right now this doesn't worry me.  I had been looking at the Samsung SIII, but I think I'm settled on the Nexus 4 now.  Even if I weren't convinced, the price saving is hard to ignore. Perhaps the tough question is on the tablet.  I was surprised to see the older dual-core processor in the Nexus 10 created by Samsung.  Why does the phone have (or need?) better speed than the tablet?  I'd have almost thought it would be the other way around.  The Nexus 10 is however competitively priced; if I was after a strong performer I might look into the Asus Transformer, but it's significantly more expensive and trails the Nexus 10 in screen quality.  The Transformer's detachable keyboard does look useful. So... do I jump?  Buy a Nexus 4 and a Nexus 10? Google - when are you going to put more stock on your shelves?!  They've emptied in less than a week, before I even had time to look!

+1'd post by Michael PoloniUbuntu for Android http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iv1Z7bf4jXY This idea is where I think generic desktop computing should be heading.  The traditional computer will still have its place for a while yet, and particularly while we're so reliant on them for heavy uses. But I can see this particularly taking off in the corporate world.  Why supply staff with a phone and a desktop?  Give them a phone with your own corporate VM running on it, then just dock the phone to your workstation and you're ready!  Add another VM for use at home. Moving software services to the cloud will also help achieve this, as intensive computational processing need not reside on the local device.  Perhaps the greatest challenge will be freeing us from the grasp of Microsoft Office (although maybe you could rely on VDI to solve that need), because it's still the most powerful suite by a long way. #twitter   #crosspost

There are some which just won't work so well.  Like the "plastic-bottle-scoopers" - they will be too flimsy for anything serious.  And I have another idea for storing emergency supplies when on holidays - a plastic bag within the dirty laundry bag :)

+1'd post by Bryan MurphyJust read about a neat feature in Akka (part of the Scala stack from http://typesafe.com but note that Akka also has a Java API) called Agents.   The functionality builds on top of the use of Immutable data (which in Scala is facilitated by efficient Copy On Write collection implementations) so that "modifying" data returns you a copy with your changes (like some of the String functions do).   The Agent is the interface to your data (for any type T).  To modify your data you pass it a function  that take a "T" and returns a "T" (in Java speak that would be an object that has a method that takes a "T" and returns a "T").   The agent enables mutliple simultaneous readers and ensures the writes are sequenced.  The only time the Agent needs to block the readers is when it quickly swaps the current value for "T" which it only does after a modifying function has completed (and would be done in another thread).   A very clean and high performance design made simple in Scala but would be conceivable to use the same design pattern in Java (eg using Guava for Immutable collections).

+1'd post by Michael PoloniSecure CD Ripping & Ruby Ripper A couple of years ago I went through the process of ripping all my audio CDs into a transferable media format.  I used Sound Juicer in Ubuntu Linux on my laptop.  There were a few CDs that would not extract properly, but I put that down to either compatibility issues with my drive or dying discs. Later, as I listened to the ripped music, I discovered that not everything had ripped so seamlessly.  Of the small sample I've enjoyed, a very small number of tracks have occasional blips in the music.  That is - the music didn't rip properly! Reading up I've discovered that this is a common problem.  The audio compact disc is not meant to be perfect, even though it is digital.  Therefore I want a solution to rip the audio in a more secure way. The most popular/robust tool for doing this in Linux appears to be 'cdparanoia'.  This is a command line app, which works by copying the music as data files.  The data can be ripped multiple times so as to do a comparison, chunk by chunk, to pick up any inconsistencies. But command line isn't for everyone.  And it makes a messy task for grabbing & populating metadata for each track.  So here's the solution I've found: RubyRipper http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Rubyripper RubyRipper is a GUI wrapper that uses 'cdparanoia' and some other useful tools.  It will download album and track information from http://freedb.org, allowing you to edit the data before ripping. It also manages the conversion to different audio formats for you. So far I've been quite impressed with this little app, and the backend applications it relies on.  There are a few minor problems, but it's done a much better job at ripping my CDs than Sound Juicer and Asunder did - it's detected & corrected blips, and handled "enhanced" CDs much much better. How to install it in Ubuntu 12.04? * Install some prerequisites: sudo apt-get install cd-discid cdparanoia flac normalize-audio ruby-gnome2 ruby vorbisgain mp3gain lame * Download the latest tarball from http://code.google.com/p/rubyripper/ and extract it; * Install Ruby Ripper by changing to the directory of the tarball you just extracted, and: ** ./configure --enable-lang-all --enable-gtk2 --enable-cli ** sudo make install From the default settings, I recommend increasing the required matches on errors to 3 and maximum tries to rip each track to something big like 15.  I came across one CD that took 14 attempts to match a chunk 3 times (although I haven't yet listened to the music to see if it still blips or not)! Things to watch out for: * RubyRipper should appear in the dash after you next login.  To find it immediately, you'll need to call it from the command line: rrip_gui * Occasionally it will crash upon looking up the track metadata from http://freedb.org.  Just restart the app. * If track metadata (e.g. track title) has a - or a / in it, this seems to throw RubyRipper off.  For some reason these characters get treated as a field delimiter.  So be sure to check all the artist names and track titles that have been downloaded from http://freedb.org, as you may need to edit them before ripping & encoding. 100+ music CDs down ... many more to go! +1'd post by Michael PoloniHeard what I thought was the return of the pesky blackbird in the backyard this afternoon.  But when I walked over to take a closer look, it turned out to be something much smaller, and faster! The curious little birds let me get quite close, and if I stood still would happily come as close as a couple of metres.  The two of them enjoyed the fresh water I'd placed in the bird bath - I just wish I had the DSLR camera to take some photos (it's overseas at the moment).  The male (I'm guessing it was the male) was parading its spectacular tail feathers as it danced around the bath, all spread out in a fan shape.  Occasionally the female (I'm guessing) would jump down to the bath to join him. At first I thought they might be willy wagtails, but I've now found that they were grey fantails.  It's easy to pick thanks to their song.  I'll have to look around for the nest.  http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/species/Rhipidura-albiscapa Here's a few good photos I've found showing the waving tail feathers: * http://www.biodiversitysnapshots.net.au/BDRS/public/speciesInfo.htm?spid=424&mode=fieldguide * http://www.flickr.com/photos/scott_contini/4891530679/ * http://www.flickr.com/photos/merryjack/5290043860/ * http://lh5.ggpht.com/_OV9QICon5o4/SZ6NYVupbFI/AAAAAAAAEVw/je8Gmc7v6w4/s1600/KMG_7496_lr.jpg Last year's visitor, the spotted pardalote, has returned and is nesting in the cracks of the old incinerator (which is full of compost).

+1'd post by Bryan MurphyJust discovered something pretty cool with Java in situations when you want to find the class of something which is a generic type parameter.  Up till now I have passed the class object in eg registerHandler(Handler<T> handler, Class<T> messageClass) {    // Put handler in map keyed on the messageClass } In this situation there is no object of type T to call getClass() on so it seemed like the best I could but it always irked me that the messageClass was redundant since the type was already known by the Handler. Well another bit of code I saw recently opened my eyes to the fact that the Handler Class object actually has access to the Class object of the type parameter it was instantiated with.  The code looks like this: Class<T> messageClass =    (Class<T>) ((ParameterizedType) handler.getClass()                         .getGenericSuperclass()                      ).getActualTypeArguments()[0]; Now the registerHandler method can be simplified (see below) and I am a happy camper. registerHandler(Handler<T> handler)

+1'd post by Alex MegremisOne more favorite from my visit to Daylesford Lake. This view was the biggest surprise of the day. I walked around with Zoe for a while, and we saw various interesting perspectives. This, however, was only visible from the back of the café where we had lunch. (I spent more than a couple of seconds trying to decide whether that owl is real or just ornamental ;) ) This was easily the most challenging photograph of the evening to produce. For one thing, this had to be an HDR. The luminosity range was just too great for a single RAW, so I took 7 bracketed handheld photographs. The other issue was achieving a satisfactory result in dealing with the range of color temperatures in the scene. To manage all this, the 7 exposures were merged into a 32bit TIFF file in Photoshop's HDR Pro. The file was then taken into Lightroom 4.1 to control exposure levels, white balance variations, etc. #photography   #photographyworkflow   #hdr
Image
+1'd post by Alex MegremisAfter several false starts, Zoe finally convinced me to drive up to Daylesford. It was fairly sedate drive up, but the location itself more than made up for the mundane 90min behind the wheel. We were harassed by a pack of ducks, we befriended a black swan, and we enjoyed an overall amazing afternoon. Photographing landscapes is actually tricky business. Conveying to your viewer what you see with your mind's eye is not simple. Subject matter and light are the key ingredients. A plain dirty rock will look just as boring in the most gorgeous sunset as the most gorgeous forrest will at high noon.  I was truly surprised at what I saw at this place. A truly idyllic location presented itself, with more photographic opportunities than I actually had time to avail myself of. This photograph a single RAW, processed entirely in Lightroom 4.1 . Shadows were accentuated, blues were deepened, and the sunset blue ambience was warmed up. #photography #lake #workflow   #landscapephotography   #landscape

+1'd post by Dean BuddUnit Testing vs. Test Driven Design Unfortunately many developers still don't know or don't think about the difference. As I mentioned earlier, "Unit Testing" is the practice of testing your own code to understand whether it behaves the way you want or not. On the other hand Test Driven Design is the discipline of using "Unit Testing" when you design the software. This small difference actually makes big impact on your software design. Let me explain why: If your development team is using "Unit Testing"; creating the code base first (even a single unit) and write the tests after creating the code base, it actually means that you're hanging yourself with "Unit Testing" rope. The reason is every time you need a change in the design that affects your unit; you will have to fix the existing unit tests too. In the beginning it seems like a small problem, but it will be a real big problem later in the development phase since you will have lots of unit/integration tests depend on certain design assumptions. And when this design changes, your tests will all have to be changed. After some time you will also notice that your development team is spending more time on fixing tests than developing the software itself. Moreover, it is very hard to identify "what to test" for an already written code than a code that you are about to write. This is also why many developers that follow "Unit Testing" start testing the methods in the unit than the unit behaviors. However, if your development team is adopting the TDD discipline, you will notice all these design changes will be identified in the early phase by developers. Writing tests first will allow you to discover the spots where new design is crucial, just by showing how hard/easy to write the test for that particular behavior. On top of this, TDD will ensure that your unit/integration tests will be based on behaviors rather than methods. As we all know, most design changes are just the separation of concerns within the unit/module. Another way of saying this is, your responsibilities will shift to some other unit/module, but the behavior will still exist in your system. As you can see, instead of maintaining the existing unit/integration tests, you will be just moving them to the new unit.

Image
+1'd post by Michael PoloniI'm not usually one to post political comment online, however the state of affairs in Victoria is proving interesting. Much more so than anything which is going on Federally (although the potential scaling back of the NBN is something that concerns me). Could the current Victorian coalition government be a one-term government? Perhaps our mainstream media have been too distracted with Julia to notice the troubles in this state, with the Coalition on a whisper thin margin of 1 seat - a margin that's under threat with incidents such as that with the member for Frankston. I'm particularly concerned with the disregard being paid to education in the latest budget, which is nothing to mention all the broken promises that Ted is leaving strewn in his wake. But these cuts to education - they could really come back to bite, especially in the long-term. I don't understand how it is sensible to throw more money into law and order (e.g. prisons) instead of education. A good education will help keep people out of the prison system! Antony Green has posted an interesting analysis on the redistribution of seats to take place before the next election. The Liberals and Nationals could lose safe seats, whilst Labor gain more: http://blogs.abc.net.au/antonygreen/2012/05/prospects-for-the-victorian-state-redistribution.html So - It's not just poor performance that the Baillieu Government need to contend with. Back to education, the TAFE sector is going to see massive cut backs later this year. Crisis meetings are now taking place; we're looking at colleges and universities being short tens of millions of dollars. Staff will lose their jobs, courses will be cut, and quality will deteriorate. Could the impact of these cuts be felt in the bush also? The Age's Farrah Tomazin wrote an opinion piece the other day suggesting it just might: http://www.theage.com.au/opinion/politics/bush-or-bust-20120519-1yxix.html I'm disappointed to see cuts to cycling infrastructure funding. Cycling is surging in this city, and is becoming an important part of the commute to work. Some eye-opening stats here from Bicycle Network Victoria http://www.bicyclenetwork.com.au/general/change-the-world/93685/ But alas, more cuts to funding for cyclists: http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/baillieu-slashes-construction-of-cycling-projects-20120521-1z1ed.html And what about keeping down the cost of living for Victorians? That promise came true when landfill levies to local councils went up over 600% http://www.maroondahweekly.com.au/news/local/news/general/maroondah-baulks-at-rise-in-landfill-levy/2555303.aspx Clever ploy, by making the councils carry the message to the voters? Sure - Ted has a difficult task in trying to balance the budget. GST revenue from the federal Government is not what he'd like to see, and the state's economy has slowed. Add to that the Liberals politically-charged need to remain in surplus - it makes for a difficult mix. But then that's why I'd like to see some of those silly promises dumped, like PSOs at train stations. I think the funding is needed elsewhere. So, difficult times are ahead for this state and its Coalition Government. Will Ted and his colleagues find themselves still in office after the next election? Can they make it there? Are the Labor Party ready to step back into Government so soon??

+1'd post by Michael PoloniBCC is one of the worst features of email. If someone sends me a work email with an important announcement, and BCCs the email to everyone, how am I to know whether all of my key staff, customers and/or stakeholders also received it? The only way to ensure that the communication reaches them, is to do wasteful work - either contact the original sender of the email (more work for them & I) or forward it on to everyone myself (in which case they may get it more than once). If people are concerned about silly behaviour with "reply-all", set a reply-to field so that any follow up reply at least gets a prompt to prevent inadvertant email replies going to everyone. If we have a conversation in person, do we not already know who heard it? Why should a conversation in email be any different? Email is already a "wasteful" medium, in that we receive and send so much unnecessary information. Why make it "difficult" too? #gripe

The total annual expenditure appears to be about $370b. In the budget papers is a breakdown by function and I've made a nice little pie chart from it, but where's the Australian Aid expenditure for example? The Bureau of Meteorology has about a $333m budget, but where is that in this functional split - under "energy" or "General government services"? Defence has a reported budget of about $21b but does that include "special accounts", and why doesn't it match the approximately $55b in the Agency Resourcing section of the budget documents? Accrual accounting issues perhaps? I need help. http://www.budget.gov.au/

+1'd post by Alex MegremisI have to admit, I'm really loving the ICS 4.0.1 on the Nexus. It's a real joy to use. There's heaps of usability improvements since my time with 2.3.4 on the SGS. The experience is highly recommended, and the Nexus in particular for the pure ICS, non-vendor-diluted, experience, if for no other reason. I was hoping it would come with su support out of the box, but that was nothing more than unfounded, unresearched hope, and it was promptly dashed. I've also come across an annoying defect with the Gallery app where I can't get it to stop presenting the Picasa galleries no matter what account sync and cache purge trick and setting I try. Very annoying, I'm also slightly miffed to see that I'm not to be receiving OTA updates from Google, but rather though [presumably] some Telstra channel, unless I drop in a pure rom. Overall, based on these initial impressions, I would GLADLY get a ICS-based tablet for myself, once new hardware comes out as well.

+1'd post by Dean BuddGreat quote from The Clean Coder Sometimes commitments are made for us. Sometimes we find that our business has made promises to the customers without consulting us. When this happens we are honor bound to help the business find a way to meet those commitments. However, we are not honor bound to accept the commitments. The difference is important. Professionals will always help the business find a way to achieve its goals. But professionals do not necessarily accept commitments made for them by the business. In the end, if we can find no way to meet the promises made by the business, then the people who made the promises must accept the responsibility.

+1'd post by Bryan MurphyProbably old news for some of you but I learnt something about examining the Java heap today. Use can use "jmap" to dump the heap and "jhat" to examine the heap. Both programs are in the same bin directory as java. jhat is interesting in that it creates a web server on port 7000 that you can then use a browser to view. It has a lot of pre-canned queries you can look at by clicking links but it also has a query language interface (OQL) that you can use to do your own queries. Google "java heap dump" and you will get quite a few good sites that give example usage, etc.

+1'd post by Michael PoloniSo another teaching year draws to an end, final class wrapped up today. All be it once people rocked up, very late! You can tell it's the end of the semester. Looking back over the years, it feels a bit surreal. This was my 8th year supervising, although I've done a mix of 3rd & 4th year undergrads over the journey. I still enjoy it, although some years are easier than others (it was certainly a very difficult year when I was also studying at MBS on top of full-time work). It's changed such a great deal over the years. Some academics have changed, and I've seen countless supervisors come and go. It's funny looking back at how we used to run things - I kind of miss those classes we used to hold at the Corkman pub (fearlessly led by Damo)! 8 years... and if there's a place for me in 2012 it'll be 9. But I know nothing is certain, and each year I finish it thinking it will be my last, but hoping there'll still be more. I've seen it through to the end of "340", and now I've seen it through to the end of the "CSSE" Department. Perhaps that aspect is a bit sad (speaking as an alumnus). Finishing the year makes for a rewarding experience if you think that maybe you were able to impart some wisdom to at least some of the students. It's all the more enjoyable when you can see they're actually interested, which thankfully has been most of the teams over the years! So onward to one final activity for the year ... marking!
